wisp — Use & Privacy Policy

wisp is a personal assistant that runs on your own computer. You type a question in place, and wisp fetches an answer and surfaces it right where you're working — no switching apps, no dashboards, no noise. This document explains what wisp is for, what you may and may not do with it, and exactly how it handles your information. It applies both to this website (currently a waitlist) and to the wisp software once it is available.
By joining the waitlist or using wisp, you agree to what's written here.
1. What wisp is
wisp lives quietly in the background of your machine. Ask it a question and the answer is returned to you in place. The goal is simple: to let you ask something without leaving whatever you're already doing.
2. Intended use
wisp is built for personal use, on machines and accounts you own or are authorised to use. The intended purpose is everyday assistance: looking things up while you code, write, read, or work, without breaking your focus to open a browser or another app.
That is the whole of what wisp is designed and meant for. Anything outside that — particularly the uses listed in the next section — falls outside its purpose.
3. Acceptable use
You agree that you will not use wisp:
- In any proctored, monitored, invigilated, or supervised exam, test, technical interview, certification, or assessment — or in any setting where outside assistance is prohibited, or where you would be representing wisp's output as your own unaided work.
- To capture, read, record, or inject the keystrokes or input of anyone other than yourself, or to run wisp on any device, account, or session without the full knowledge and consent of the person who owns it.
- To do anything unlawful, or to break the terms, rules, or honour code of any service, platform, employer, school, or institution you are using.
- To surveil, monitor, or deceive another person.
Using wisp to gain a dishonest advantage, to misrepresent authorship, or to observe someone else's activity is contrary to the spirit and the intended purpose of the project, and is not permitted.
We may decline to provide wisp, or to keep someone on the waitlist, where we believe it is being sought for these purposes.
4. Information we collect
On your device (the wisp software): The only text that leaves your device is the question you explicitly ask wisp, which is sent to the AI provider so it can generate an answer. wisp does not build a profile of you, and it does not send your activity to us.
On this website (the waitlist): When you join the waitlist, we collect the email address you submit. That is the only personal information the waitlist asks of you. As with any website, our server may also record basic technical request information (such as IP address and browser type) in standard logs for security and reliability; this is not used to identify or track you across the web, and we do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
5. How we use your information
We use the email address you give us for one purpose only: to notify you about wisp — when it becomes available, and any directly related updates. We do not use it for unrelated marketing, we do not enrich or profile it, and we do not use it for anything you didn't sign up for.
6. Sharing and third parties
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your information. Ever.
- We do not share your email with third parties for their own use.
- The AI provider. To answer your questions, wisp sends the text of each question you ask to a third-party AI model provider, which processes it to generate a response. Only your question is sent. That provider handles the question under its own terms and privacy practices. Choose what you ask wisp accordingly, and avoid putting secrets or sensitive personal data into a question.
- Service providers. We may use standard infrastructure services (for example, to host the site or deliver waitlist emails). Any such provider only handles the minimum needed to perform that function.
- Legal. We may disclose information if genuinely required to by law.
7. Data retention
We keep your waitlist email only for as long as the waitlist is active, or until you ask us to remove it — whichever comes first. Once wisp has launched and the waitlist has served its purpose, or once you unsubscribe, your email is deleted.
8. Security
We take reasonable, standard measures to protect the limited information we hold and to keep the waitlist data safe. No method of storage or transmission over the internet is ever perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security — but we hold as little as possible, precisely so there is little to protect.
9. Your choices and rights
- Unsubscribe / deletion. You can ask to be removed from the waitlist and have your email deleted at any time, for any reason, by emailing us (Section 13). Every notification email will also include a way to opt out.
- Access. You can ask what information we hold about you, and we'll tell you.
- Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal data under local law. We'll honour valid requests under applicable law.
10. Children
wisp and this waitlist are not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has submitted their information, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
wisp is early and still developing, so this policy may change as the product takes shape. If we make a material change — especially anything affecting how your information is used — we will update this page and change the "last updated" date above. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
12. No warranty and responsibility
wisp is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. You are responsible for how you use wisp and for complying with all laws, rules, honour codes, and agreements that apply to you. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the project and its authors are not liable for any damages arising out of the use of wisp.
This limitation of liability protects the project from ordinary risk; it does not license the prohibited uses in Section 3. What wisp is for is defined by this policy, not excused by this clause.
